Last sunday, we had a power surge. The speakers popped, the lights brightened, and then the power went out for a second or two. When it came back on, so did the modem, the lights, the fan... but not my computer.

Uh oh.

Got on Ben's computer to talk to guitarbluesman for some tech support (hey, he does it professionally, so I felt compelled to run and tell him) and we tried all sorts of measures to convince the hard drive to spin up again and the motherboard to reset, but no dice. At 11:30pm I got on Richard's laptop and IMed gbjazzman with my plea, and after a chatroom with him and Pad, Matt offers to come over the very next morning, at 9am sharp, and do some surgery on Connor. I owe him a good christmas present. He requested payment was lunch, so I took him out to Stir Crazy, but damn, he got screwed on that deal!

He brought scionmattly over as well, so it was nice to see the both of them. After testing a bunch of parts in Ben's tower, we determined that my video card was fine (THANK GOD), my hard drive was fine (SWEET JESUS, THANK YOU), and the casualty list appeared to be... my CD-RW drive, my DVD-ROM drive, and my motherboard. :(

Wahhh.

A trip to CompUSA and $95 later (I know, I know, Newegg, but then I'd be computerless for three or four days, and need Matt up here again.) I had a new motherboard, and we found out that my processor is, in fact, still in working order. Yay! So Connor lives again. My surge protector is going in the fucking bin the second the new one gets here-- the new one coming with a lifetime, $75,000 'attached equipment' warrantee. Grr. I've shopped at Newegg for the rest of the parts, and hopefully they'll be here some time this weekend.

In other news, we're LANing it up from sunday-monday, hopefully with great success. We'll see.

Alas.

I should buy shorts.

Work is fine, life is fine, money is fine, Richard and I are fine. Ben, Richard, Mary and I went to meet them at Miyako's for a birthday dinner. Ben and I got him gift certificates to Lowe's, Richard got him a gift card to Borders, and Ben and Mary made him a mix CD-- "Old People Music." It got a laugh.

This Saturday, I'm going out to Palazzo di Bocce again with the Hulmes for an early father's day food/bocce fest, and Sunday midafternoon I'm heading home to do the same thing with my own parents.

As a sign off, I am going to recomment the book "Feast of Love" by Charles Baxter. <lj:music>Blue Man Group - Shadows Part 2</lj:music>

What the crap, I've been sick for three weeks now? On the upswing.

Yesterday, Richard and I drove up to Ann Arbor to visit with his brother and Tomo. We went out to a sushi place and had katsu don bento boxes for lunch, and then walked around the town. Ann Arbor is a really pretty place. Lots of places were closed, it being memorial day, but we lived. Later on we went to a gaming shop, Underworld, and browsed around-- I picked up collection 1 & 2 of Phil Foglio's Girl Genius and texted Ben about the Aspect Book; Water that I spotted on the shelf. I only brought so much pissing-about money with me, and so I didn't get it for him.

While we were there, a trio of sweaty people came in-- a large black man in the 25-30 range, and a younger, skinny-looking white high school couple.

LBM:"Wanna see something totally sweet?" Breathes heavily.
Skinny HS #1: "uh?"
Skinny HS #2: "yeah, whatever."
LBM: *runs over to comics and starts narrating to himself* "Ok, where is it, c'mon, I just need one book, oh yes oh yes, here it is... ok, it's in here somewhere, this guys GUTS are comin' out... ok ok, where is it?" *heavy breathing*
SHS1: *looks awkward*
SHS2: *looks bored*
LBM: "Ohhhh, here it is, HERE IT IS! Look, and there he ism, and ohhh... his guts are comin out... ohhhhh..... ohhhhh...." *breathes heavily on book while holding it close to his face, upsetting nearby Amanda*
LBM: "Kiriyama is so cool in this book... ohhh, look, look! His friend's all shot up... he's crying... and ohhhhhhh, his guts, ohhhh!"
Nearby Amanda: *starts casting murderous glances*
SHS1: *makes a face at the book*
SHS2: *SIGHS*
LBM: *still talking* "And ohhh... he .. with duct tape! Ohhh, his guts are just... ohhh."
NA: *fantasizes about slapping the book out of icky man's hand and cussing him out for being such a goddamned grade-school fool, then fantasizes about the sweaty drool probably in said book which would eat her hand away to a stump*
SHS2: *sighs and pulls SHS1 away*
LBM: *breathes heavily*

No matter where I was in the store, I could hear the clearly-impressed "Ohhhh!"s from this icky person. He was reading an issue of Battle Royale, by the way. Some stereotypes should not be reinforced.

Later on, we went to the arcade downstairs. The skinny boy and the LBM were playing DDR. They were covered in sweat, and yes, they were very good at it.

That unnerving encounter aside, we had a good run around Ann Arbor. We got ice cream later, then finally walked back to the car and went to Dan's apartment. We got home around 7pm, dropped off the Jeep the Hulmes so kindly lent us for the trip (with a full tank of gas!), came home, and went splat. Tired! Long day.

i didn't sleep at all, and when morning came I was a big gooey self-pitying mess, and all of my muscles hurt. Richard went to rub my back in what I'm sure was an affectionate way, but it hurt so I went "*mumble* no! s'hurts"

So he sighed and got up and decided he would go in early instead of me, for which I feel horrible about. I know he was looking forward to getting to sleep in for once, and I know I kept him up anyway with all my coughing. he said as much. I apologized a lot and asked him to lay back down, but he brushed me off, got ready, and almost left without a kiss. he's not happy with me.

sob.

so I tried to go back to sleep but I kept coughing and they're mowing the lawn outside, so I crawled out of bed and put my bathrobe on. It has a big spot of dried blood on the hem. I don't know where it came from, but I'm pretty upset, because it's long dried and hard and most likely will never come out of the fabric. i'll ask mom if she will make me a new one.

    <lj:music>Blue Man Group - Endless Column</lj:music>

I had a weekend.

Friday, Richard and I got called in a little early (9:30) to work, because one of the teachers called in sick. It was a LONG day. I worked in the little kids room again, and one of the kids, 'splat', would NOT lseep at the two hour nap. Nor would he shut up. He just babbled and babbled, loudly, for the whole two hour nap, keeping everyone else awake and resulting in some very cranky children. Dammit, kid. Fortunately it was a birthday, so after we got them up they all had some cake to keep up their good spirits.

Richard and I dragged ourselves home at 6:30. Oy. It was just a tiring day, it normally isn't so bad. On Saturday we got up and went shopping for his father's birthday, which was actrually on friday but was being celebrated on saturday. He got him a pasta-maker, and I got him Tuscan cookbook. It was one of the most pretentious cookbooks I've ever seen, mind, at $40-odd dollars and filled with more exposition than with food, but hey, I guess you need something to read while you're cooking. The author was Lori di Mori, which sounds made up.

Then we went over to the Hulmes and carpooled over to Palazza di Bocce, which is a strange and beautiful building I've passed many times. It's a combination high-class italian restaurant and bocce ball place. (And because I didn't have any idea what that was before I played it, here are the rules of Bocce for you.) I turned out to be pretty damn good at it, and Richard Sr. kept calling me "a snake in the grass." They kept bothering us about drinks or appetizers or whatnot while we played, which got irritating. Dammit, we are playing over here, we don't want a ten-course!

After two games we were out of time on the lane, and we got a table. I had some kind of noodle thing with fried eggplant on top of it. I've never had eggplant before, and it was ok. What I was more excited about, though, is the bread they brought to us-- it was the exact same look and taste as the bread I'd had every single meal, every single day, throughout my entire stay in Italy. And yes, it was just as tasty on saturday as it was then. Afterwards it was back to the Hulmes to groan and hold our stomachs and to enjoy their new lawn furniture on their deck. I always wanted a deck like theirs, though I didn't realize they had the deck I always wanted until they put all the furniture on it. Couch, coffee table, two recliners and two ottomans, all something woven and plastic coated so that it looks nice but won't fall apart under the pressure of the weather, with cushions you bring in at night. We had tea with sugar and milk, chatted until we'd digested a little more, and then Richard and I said our goodbyes and ambled on home.

Sunday, I played WoW until 1pm, and then roped Ben into helping me clean the living room up in preparation for paramonium coming to visit. (squee!) We actually got it almost all the way clean before he showed up at the door, at which point thereafter we enjoyed the bagel chips he'd brought, and... played WoW. He sat on my bed with his laptop, I sat at Connor, and we played our youngish Horde characters all day. Mary made a beautiful dinner, we ate that, played some more, and then went over to Cold Stone Creamery (a place I'd heard much of, but never been to) for some of their hand-mixed ice cream. It was pretty tasty.

And then more WoW. I worried that he'd be bored, but no, he told me he'd more or less come over with this in mind, so all was well. We had a good time, I saw him to the door at midnightish, and went to bed not long after.

And now I'm up and feeling a little bit sick and gross again. I'm going to read my webcomics and whine.

Besides, I probably got it from them. :(

Also, yesterday on WoW I bought the most expensive banana in history in the pursuit of transferring money to the Horde side for one of Richard's characters. O.o Goodness.

If you're wondering about the fate of this banana, then I will be forced-- yes, you press my hand -- to tell you that I immediately ate it and benefited from twelve health regenerated per second for the following twenty-one. <lj:music>Blindside - Pitiful</lj:music>

Done the White Rose Academy thing for a week and a day, now. The kids finally seem used to me, and the majority of them know my name-- to the rest I am Mary or 'mama', though I'm sure both of those are just from habit and not from a delusional idea of who I actually am. Yesterday was crazy hot, so Richard and I armed ourselves with spray bottles and blasted kids whenever they came close enough while we were outside. Oh, they screamed and complained, but then why were they giggling and coming back? Oh. That's right. To tug on us until they could get our attention and announce "You can't squirt me in the face right here! *holds back hair*"

We refilled twice.

My priest is level 55. Oh baby. Five more levels to go.... sigh. Without the instant gratification of killing things for exp, I'm not sure how I'll go on when I ceiling at 60. Guess I'll just... have to go play Horde! Mm... undead warriors...

I was pretty sick over the weekend, but I bounced back from it very quickly. Maybe, I don't know, sunshine and outside air have something to do with it? (It's nice to get paid to play outside!) When I went home for Mother's Day I told them how my first week at the Academy was, and the first thing they asked was how many hours and how much pay I was getting. When I told them "Oh, fifteen hours a week right now-- we go in for three hours each afternoon..." they scoffed and asked if I was looking for a second job, cause that's crap! I reminded them that 1) I don't actually -need- a job right now, and 2) I am making as much as I made when I worked 30 hours a week as a register monkey. They looked suitably chastened, but really, ask if I'm happy before you start criticizing my goddamn lifestyle! ....Afterwards I fed them funny stories about the kids, and mom offered to make a box of felt costume capes and masks to send over. I gave her the go ahead. I did lunch there and dinner with the Hulme's+Tomo, which was grilled steaks, corn on the cob, and crazy cheesy mashed potato things. We ate outside on their new porch furniture, and the weather was perfect for it.

So, all in all, A good week and weekend. I'm feeling almost healthy again, and now I'm hungry, so I'm going to shove off and bother Richard into getting some food with me.

    <lj:music>Era 2 - Sentence</lj:music>

I can't be bothered to write a coherent update, as the only remarkable events in my life happen hours and days apart, but I will try.

I started work at White Rose Academy on Monday. (It's already Thursday?!) The kids are adorable, and they're getting used to me slowly-- the little ones still can't be bothered to pronounce my name, so I am Ms. Mary. One has even gone so far as to, when I corrected her, tell me that I was WRONG. So, yeah.

Yesterday they got to go outside, and I showed them how to make sand castles in lieu of being forced to chase them around the yard-- if I had done so, I supect I would be roped into doing it daily for the rest of the summer, and that would get mighty old. Then I told them to dig for dinosaur bones in the sandbox, and soon enough there were some eight children digging trenches, guarding thier 'digsites' and finding 'dino eggs' and 'teeth'-- just pebbles. They didn't even need me to identify their finds, because they already knew perfectly well what they had found. Deflected!

On the way home on Tuesday, Richard and I found ourselves stopped in traffic partly up the road. There was a line in both directions, of cars that were simply stopped. About thirty seconds later, we started slowly moving onwards again, and I saw a mother duck and a line of single-file yellow fuzzies marching up the curb. Traffic had stopped so they could cross, and the mother duck was queenly as she walked on. It made my day.

In less uplifting news, I got my grades back. I got a 0.0 for Am Lit, out of a possible 4.0-- heh. I'm happy that she just blasted my grade, actually, rather than give me some snippy little 1.whatever. I'll clear it in the fall, and that'll be that. Research designs I scraped by with a 3.0, and art a 3.3-- NOT my best semester at all, but I'll take the Research grade and run with it, and drag myself back up come the fall term.

It's going to take a while to get into it.

In the meantime, I've been warcrafting it up something fierce. I gave Joe a copy of it as a housewarming present, knowing full well it might eat him. I'm a monster like that.

Richard cleaned our kitchen, and it looks fantastic. We've been cooking it in nightly since-- it's so much easier to -keep- a place clean than to clean it, after all, and it's cheaper to cook than to flee in terror from it and do take out each night.

Also, we are finally the proud owners of a salt shaker and pepper mill. I always wanted one, but never actually went out and bought a set! Joe had some at his apartment and I got jealous, so Richard and I scooted off to Meijer last night and bought our own pair!
